Recently one of my students asked a great question about voicemail in English and I thought that you might have the same question as well.
Your voice conveys more than you may realize. We can sound bored, excited, tired, sick, relaxed, or happy just by the posture we have when we’re on a call. It’s true that when you leave a voicemail, no one will see you slumped in a chair, but they will be able to hear it. Don’t overdo it, and don’t be fake; that comes across in a message, too. Again, leave a message that sounds like it would if you were talking to someone in person. Smile, sit up straight, stand if you prefer, and feel free to use any gestures you would typically use.
1. State Your Business Name. The first thing your callers should hear is the name of your business or organization. This assures them that they have dialed the right phone number and keeps them on the line.
4. Avoid Using Your Position. When you put your position in your email address, like “[email protected]”, it stands out and outlines which skills you possess.
34. Hey, this is [your name]. I’m sorry for not picking your call right now. Please leave your name, number and a brief message, and I will get back to you at the earliest opportunity. You can also reach me via email at [email address] and I will reply to you shortly.
38. Thanks for calling [company name]. We’re unable to take your call right now, but leave your details and we’ll call you right back.
