Until recently, it has not been possible to have cell phone music on hold and most people assume it is impossible to have any audio on hold, since there is no “hold button” on a cell phone. However, now there is a way to provide music on hold or messages on hold on your smart phone using the RingCentral virtual PBX service app.
Note that the music will always play from the beginning each time the unit is turned on. This isn't a problem when using the device for music on hold, it's intended purpose. But for my use, I bought a bunch of 1 GB USB drives, and recorded different "cheesy elevator music" on each, which we will be able to change out for variety.

Whether it’s music, marketing messages, or a combination of both, the recording should be long enough so it doesn’t loop back to where they started when they were first put on hold. If you don’t typically have long wait times, this should be no problem. If calls get stacked up sometimes, you’ll want to make sure that the recording is at least as long as your typical wait time on a busy day.
Your file will be delivered to you with 15 seconds of background music (or blank airtime if you do not choose background music) after the voice message. This will give you 15 seconds of music (or blank airtime) between each message when run in a loop.
You’ll notice that there’s not too much of a difference between the track when played at CD quality and over the phone. All the instruments can still be heard clearly, and the same techniques I used to introduce clipping on the other two tracks had no effect (I could have kept amplifying the track until it did, but it proved the point). And because it’s fairly bland and inoffensive, you’re not going to upset anyone too much if it’s not their cup of tea.
