Unfortunately, it gets worse. Due to general sloppiness when it comes to setting the volume level for music on hold, a form of distortion known as “clipping” can appear, and regularly does if you’re willing to believe personal anecdotal evidence. If you want to know about the science behind clipping, then Wikipedia will tell you everything you need to know, but for those of us who have things to get on with, we can get by just knowing that when something is played too loud down a phone line, the sound starts to distort and sound really horrible.

Of the 10,000 callers who heard hold music during their minute wait, only 13 percent dropped off, and more than half guessed their wait time was less than a minute. Often, it’s a good idea to precede the message with a bright alert sound effect to grab snoozing customer attention:
This may sound odd, but the audio track needs a bit of grit or background music, or it should clearly sound like an automated recording, so the caller knows that it’s a recording.
Messaging on hold is an excellent tool for keeping callers and clients updated with company news and goings-on. Recordings can be used to update customers on changes to opening hours and scheduling, service delivery information, daily events and much more.

Or, if one of your team members is dealing with an issue that requires escalation and they need you to get involved that is possible too all in just a few clicks.
