A typical Message on Hold program is 4 minutes long. Because a voice over talent typically reads between 100 and 112 words per minute, the script for a four-minute program can be up to 400 words, allowing for four to six paragraphs or messages, interspersed by brief intervals of music. Longer audio storage and program lengths are available if necessary.
Tone - select the right tone for your business brand. If your target market are young millennials, then the script would most likely include some slang words, be quite laid back and the script would be recorded in an energetic tone. If you primarily service the business market, then the script would be more articulate and recorded with a more professional tone. Hold music gained mainstream popularity in the early aughts. As cell phone customization became more of a focus, ringback tones gained popularity. People carefully chose the song to play in lieu of ringtones for incoming calls. It was a chance to control the call experience and showcase your personality before you even said hello. By the time the first US national carrier offered ringback tones in 2004, it was a multibillion-dollar industry. Hold music keeps your callers distracted from the wait. Why Use Hold Music at All?

It’s important to ensure the content is informative and relevant to the caller. And the rule ‘less is more’ very much applies to writing for the ear. It’s important to keep the sentences short and to the point. A popular way to get a message across is follow this structure: Introduce the topic in the first sentence e.g. Did you know that BusinessCo now offers no contract plans for hosted PBX and business VoIP? Explain how the information will benefit the caller in the second sentence e.g. And that means complete flexibility for your business and no long-term commitments. Wrap up with a call to action in the third sentence e.g. To find out more, visit our website businesspbx.com.au or speak to one of our Business Consultants when you come off hold.
