Regrettably for my purpose, the software requires that you add a "message on hold", which makes perfect sense for this devices intended purpose, if not for my own use. But I worked around the problem by recording a second of silence and then adjusted the software the effectively play only my cheesy elevator music.

Plus VoIP and mobile operators use high-compression codecs that degrade the overall quality of the sound. A good codec can take a 9600bps audio stream (toll quality ISDN voice) and take it down to the required bandwidth by a factor of 10 or more.
