Keep your audience in mind: musical breaks that are too long are boring, but message blurbs that are long or too detailed can be overwhelming. Length – if your callers typically wait 2 minutes at a time, then at least 2 minutes of programming should be the goal. The idea is to ensure the callers don’t hear repeated messages every time they call. A typical on-hold message is 4-8 minutes in length.

AT&T has offered music while the phone is ringing to the calling party (music plays instead of ring...ring..ring), but they charge what seems to be a lot for the service and it only lasts for a year, as I recall.
