So modern technology, even with the most advanced VoIP business phone systems, has not improved the plight of the on hold song. If you are interested in learning more, check out Tom Scott's explanation at the Milton Keynes Museum, in their Connected Earth gallery.

The term “ring” has long been an anachronism, as there haven’t been actual bells on phones for decades. The first ringback tones were created in Finland in 1998, when the Finnish mobile operator Radiolinja began offering the service of hearing customized monophonic ringtones and ringback tones that were sent over the air. Ringback tones, for whatever reason, never really caught on in America the way they did internationally.
AT&T has offered music while the phone is ringing to the calling party (music plays instead of ring...ring..ring), but they charge what seems to be a lot for the service and it only lasts for a year, as I recall. Lots of choices of music, though. No idea about call holding, try calling AT&T. Apr 14, 2009 3:40 PM Apr 14, 2009 4:53 PM in response to PsychedelicWonders In response to PsychedelicWonders

If you think about, the cost of “NOT HAVING” on hold messages is far greater than any investment you may make in custom on hold messages. Why? A lost call equals a lost sale and a lost customer. Two things no business owner wants to hear. And to make matters worse, you also have to consider the wasted advertising spend you invested in order to generate that call. It’s estimated that caller abandonment (caller hangups) cost businesses billions of dollars each year.
Don’t allow their holding time to be a waste of time for them or for you as a business.
