Why would you spend hundreds or thousands of pounds enticing new customers to call your business only to provide them with an initial experience that is less than stellar and doesn’t reflect your business’s brand? Why wouldn’t you utilise this opportunity to market your business services and products to a captive audience?
Almost all phone systems* manufactured today have Message on Hold capability, but to determine exactly what you have before your purchase a Message on Hold system, it is best to check with your phone system vendor. Need equipment?

Hiring a specialized on hold messaging company can get expensive. As a more affordable alternative, you can use pre-made, ready to use on hold messages and music, like the examples we mentioned earlier.
What sort of genre, tempo, or rhythm best exemplifies your brand? Lyrics or instrumental? Heavy bass or soft tones? Like ringback tones, this music is your caller’s introduction to your company. Make sure it’s on brand. A law firm probably doesn’t want the latest dance floor bass drop. A music agency, on the other hand, might want to feature some of their top artists and latest hits. Don’t take this to mean that traditionally serious industries can’t flex their personality—just acknowledge what’s appropriate in your domain.
It’s very important to thank your customers for waiting. Being on hold is not a desirable experience for anyone. The least you can do it thank your clients for their time and to help them not feel neglected.
The effectiveness of the first three above-mentioned elements are often neutralized by a poor understanding of the broadcast carrier of the On Hold message and how it affects the recording process. For more information on this topic, click here.
Custom on-hold messages with background music, can be integrated into most telephone systems. Take advantage of your callers' waiting time to play important messages or broadcast your pre-made radio commercials. Companies spend huge amounts of money on advertising to get people's attention for just few seconds. So why not use this precious waiting time while you have the full attention of your callers, for free? It's the perfect opportunity to talk about your new products, mention promotions or remind people of what makes you stand out. Showcase yourself!
No one wants to be stuck on hold with silence (30 seconds feels like 5 minutes!).
This brings up the ever-present question of appropriate branding for your business. At a funeral home, Green says, you don't want an upbeat pop song, for obvious reasons. Mark Malekpour, who works at Beatsuite, a music library which sells a variety of songs specifically for hold systems, says that companies too often want popular music. "For an insurance company, you don't want something from Queen or U2," he said. "When you're choosing music for an insurance company, it shouldn't feel happy or feel good or lighthearted, because insurance is something you have to have, and you want to think, 'These guys get what insurance is all about.' " (Beatsuite's bestselling hold song is called "Inspiring Innovation," which is tagged as: "Success, achievement, and trustworthy.")
I agree with you. The music phone service provider use is never the best! Like you, when I switch to my calendar on iPhone and ask my caller to wait while I do that, it would be great to have one of my iPod tracks play to him until I pressed the green bar again to return to the call. Surely one could set that up independently of the phone service provider: just a matter of substituting my music choice for my voice until I clicked back off hold?? If it is a genre, hold music, it's fair to say, is a troubled one with few hits. It's not really meant to be loved or even listened to — it's meant to communicate something specific: Don't hang up. (Cornell makes this plea specifically at the end of his song.) Silence is believed to be a death knell for phone calls — people will simply think the line is dead and hang up. This is true even on non-hold calls; it's why phone companies transmit something called a "comfort tone" over phone lines, a barely audible synthetic noise that signals a connection is still there.
Broadcast positive messages about your business, which can increase brand awareness and loyalty. For example, we strongly recommend describing accomplishments, your social commitments or any other pertinent subject.
We will determine whether your communications platform (phone system) can use our Hosted Streaming Music On Hold Messages, which will automatically change which messages are heard based on time of day, day of the week and other scheduling preferences. We will find out if you will need a music on hold device (player) or not.
They didn't have the headset I ordered in stock (despite saying it was available) - They contacted me, apologised profusely and gave me an upgrade for the same price! I wish all companies behaved the same and gave as good customer service. Happy customer and will return! A+
1. Start with a warm greeting. It’s only polite to say “Hello”. However, don’t forget to ask the caller to stay on the line and wait.
