Generic music can help keep them on the line, but why waste money playing pointless music, that requires a license to play, when you can be promoting what your company does?

With on-hold, it’s not just about upselling other services, although that is important. You can use the time a customer is on hold to educate them more about your business and about your industry.
I agree with you. The music phone service provider use is never the best! Like you, when I switch to my calendar on iPhone and ask my caller to wait while I do that, it would be great to have one of my iPod tracks play to him until I pressed the green bar again to return to the call. Surely one could set that up independently of the phone service provider: just a matter of substituting my music choice for my voice until I clicked back off hold?? When callers are put on hold, music is played over the phone while they are waiting. You can upload your own music file to play, or several music files to rotate. If you do not upload your own files, callers will hear the music that is set by default. - Supported audio formats include: .WAV, .MP3 and .OGG; file size should not exceed 16 MB.
2. YOU HAVE A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE. The time that your callers spend on hold is time when they are a captive audience. Providing messaging when callers are on hold helps occupy and entertain them to some degree; and most importantly, your business can make the most of that captive customer time.
In a few simple steps you can have a customised sell on hold message in as little as seven days.
So while this loss of quality is fine for regular conversations where it's just people speaking, if you're planning on piping music down the telephone line, you need to remember that the audio quality will, at best, be around 24 times worse than what you'd hear on a CD.

Even if your wait time is short, don’t discount the power of hold music. OnSIP’s average wait time averaged 18 seconds last month, which is just long enough for the caller to notice that the instrumental music is pleasant, with enough character to prevent boredom, before our team picks up. When that’s the last thought in your caller’s head before speaking with your business, it’s likely to be a more pleasant conversation than it might have been otherwise.
I was wondering if its possible to have music play for the people that I will have on hold?
