While we are technically unable to put hold music directly onto a cell phone, there IS a way to have this feature and many other functions of an expensive phone system, using a cloud-based phone setup and a simple application on your smartphone. Whether you work on your cell phone exclusively, or you need an office phone (or phones) in addition
.
So what can we do to avoid inflicting further musical misery on our own customers while they’re patiently sitting on hold? We could just go back to playing a ringing sound, or an intermittent beep just to let people know they’re still connected, but that would be awfully dull. The best compromise is relatively simple electronic music that doesn't have too much going on as the ideal choice for hold music as it requires far less refined sound quality to get a decent rendition down a telephone connection.
If we learned anything from Napster, it’s that music doesn’t come for free. While there are a few free music sites out there, there are plenty of royalty-free websites for finding hold music, but keep in mind you may have to pay a subscription fee or download fee. (OnSIP subscribers can access three free music channels; read on for more details.) If you’re of the mind that your business could and should use Top 40 or other recent tracks, you will have to pay royalties for the right to use them.
For the average 4-minute on hold message, we recommend no more than 2 music tracks. Having too much variation in music can distract your audience. Longer programs can accommodate more music themes. To sample our music, please visit our production music library.
The cost of a message/music on hold system depends on whether you require physical media equipment. Digital MOH equipment can cost between $150 to $1,500, due to differences in the type of hardware and its capabilities (i.e. included phones, or phone line and extension capacity). If you already have on hold equipment, a virtual media MOH system is typically billed as a one time fee or yearly contract ($100 to $700). Vendors may charge a one time set up fee (up to $100) and charge additional monthly ($50 to $90) or quarterly fees ($75 to $95). Many offer free 30 day system trials. On Hold Messaging System Sample Costs InteliTouch MOH500E Music on Hold Adaptor for NON Ksu Phone - The Telecom Spot - $55 (free shipping) - On-hold audio capability for single or multi-line phones (music on hold for 1-4 lines & up to 16 extensions). Hold button activation requires a TEHMA device on each extension; purchase includes 2 TEHMAS.
So, given that hold music is such a powerful potential source of frustration, why do companies continue to get it wrong? Reading the articles that are out there, there seems to be a lot of speculation regarding the best choice of music to placate or even entertain customers while they wait in your queue. Some common suggestions include “Hanging On The Telephone” by Blondie, or Lionel Richie’s “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?”. Or how about looking up the customer’s record in your call centre CRM, grabbing their date of birth, and playing something based on their age range - pop for the under 25s and presumably something fusty for the oldies?
Currently the on hold music starts from the beginning every time. Our on hold file has office information, bios of our doctors, as well as dental tips and services we provide. Since the on hold plays from the beginning every time someone is placed on hold, they end up hearing the same thing every time. We would LOVE the ability to choose for our on hold audio to loop. And when someone is placed on hold they just start listening to where the audio recording is currently on. So they get to hear different parts. Whether it’s music, marketing messages, or a combination of both, the recording should be long enough so it doesn’t loop back to where they started when they were first put on hold. If you don’t typically have long wait times, this should be no problem. If calls get stacked up sometimes, you’ll want to make sure that the recording is at least as long as your typical wait time on a busy day.
