So, given that hold music is such a powerful potential source of frustration, why do companies continue to get it wrong? Reading the articles that are out there, there seems to be a lot of speculation regarding the best choice of music to placate or even entertain customers while they wait in your queue. Some common suggestions include “Hanging On The Telephone” by Blondie, or Lionel Richie’s “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?”. Or how about looking up the customer’s record in your call centre CRM, grabbing their date of birth, and playing something based on their age range - pop for the under 25s and presumably something fusty for the oldies?
Our scriptwriters have years of experience in writing for audio, especially on hold and IVR systems. We’ll create an on hold message your callers will be happy to listen to – avoiding the clichés and stock phrases they hate to hear.
For the average 4-minute on hold message, we recommend no more than 2 music tracks. Having too much variation in music can distract your audience. Longer programs can accommodate more music themes. To sample our music, please visit our production music library.

The cost of a message/music on hold system depends on whether you require physical media equipment. Digital MOH equipment can cost between $150 to $1,500, due to differences in the type of hardware and its capabilities (i.e. included phones, or phone line and extension capacity). If you already have on hold equipment, a virtual media MOH system is typically billed as a one time fee or yearly contract ($100 to $700). Vendors may charge a one time set up fee (up to $100) and charge additional monthly ($50 to $90) or quarterly fees ($75 to $95). Many offer free 30 day system trials. In an ideal world you’d never put a caller on hold, but since most of the time that’s not a reasonable expectation for those tasked with receiving calls, your hold button is necessary. And, when it comes to your business, silence is not golden. Dead air on the other end of the line is not only a waste of a golden opportunity, it can leave callers frustrated, questioning whether or not you’re still even on the line.
For those still using analogue or digital phone systems, voice on ISDN circuits has a bandwidth of around 4000Hz. The audio from an analogue phone is sampled at 8000Hz, and because of the nyquist theorem, must be low-pass filtered to 4000Hz. So any frequencies in the audio beyond 4000Hz are lost. Interestingly, the human ear and mind are good at recognising human speech, so this is considered "toll-quality" voice, i.e. good enough to pay for. This is the reason why certain vocalised letters are difficult or impossible to tell apart on the phone. For example, the differences between B, P, T, C, etc. are almost entirely above 4000Hz.
