You’ve heard the basic format for on hold messages before: “Thank you for holding. A representative will be with you shortly…” But there’s far more to an on hold message than the same robotic voice over and over.
One of the most challenging aspects of writing for speech is optimising text to be read aloud and recorded. On paper, long, complex sentences are easily accommodated. When read out aloud, the same sentences can sound awkward and confusing.

Super helpful service when I ordered the wrong headset, Jo was super helpful in recommending one with a USB drive and replacing the one I ordered. Highly recommend this company for their customer service. I wish more companies were like this. 😀
"We have actually had a few callers ask to be placed back on hold just to hear the entire production." - Jake Skeens / Suncoast Communications
“We have people call us back and ask us to be put on hold because they want to share it with their friends. We love the humorous approach.” - Susan Penman / Town and Country Hotel San Diego (Hear a sample)

I agree with you. The music phone service provider use is never the best! Like you, when I switch to my calendar on iPhone and ask my caller to wait while I do that, it would be great to have one of my iPod tracks play to him until I pressed the green bar again to return to the call. Surely one could set that up independently of the phone service provider: just a matter of substituting my music choice for my voice until I clicked back off hold?? Instead of writing to inform people or to entertain them, you need to write your script as a way to create a conversation. You need to imagine what someone would say to another person and then put it on the page. Don’t be afraid if it feels like you’re talking to yourself — that just means you’re writing well.
Verbal Content – generally, you should use 100 words to make up 1 minute of content produced with background music. In other words, one to two paragraphs per minute. The topic can range from product promotions to general company information.
Remember that part about getting more bang for your buck when you use a professionally produced on hold program? Here's where it gets really interesting - if you're doing everything right, and answering the questions and providing information that your customers really need and want to hear, there's a good chance you can reuse the content you've already created. You can repurpose your Message On Hold as overhead announcements in your facility or store, as short videos, as website audio, and more. When you think outside of the box, there are many ways to take what you have and make it something more.
Fantastic customer service from Lee when he set up an automatic answer message system for us. Nothing was too much trouble and he helped to solve our problem very quickly and easily. Thanks for all of your help.
