For example, if you have the same people calling multiple times a week and being put on hold for long periods of time, it might be useful to update your messaging more frequently so they are getting value out of the time they are spending on hold. The more specific and targeted your voice messages are, the more impactful and successful they’ll be as a marketing tool.
Technology gives us the ability to market our businesses in many ways. One way that has been around for decades is the “on-hold” recording for your phone system. It’s one of the most underappreciated methods for showcasing your company and making sure callers have a good experience.

On hold messages are one of the best ways to communicate with your customer audience. Why? Because these messages allow you to talk to your customers before you even pick up the phone. Talented professional voice actors can record your voicemail greeting, company directory, call menu, and more. Greet all your customers with the most professional image possible.
"I absolutely loved the humorous material that plays when a person is on hold. Absolutely brilliant! Some of it cracked me up. Couldn't stop listening!" - Blake Bishop / Bryant Better Hearing
Until recently, it has not been possible to have cell phone music on hold and most people assume it is impossible to have any audio on hold, since there is no “hold button” on a cell phone. However, now there is a way to provide music on hold or messages on hold on your smart phone using the RingCentral virtual PBX service app.

This may sound odd, but the audio track needs a bit of grit or background music, or it should clearly sound like an automated recording, so the caller knows that it’s a recording.

Avoid beeps and radio silence. Once a customer has been placed on hold on radio silence, the customer tends to hang up in less than 40 seconds because that customer thinks, "I've been forgotten".

The problem, in my mind, is that every single one of these articles misses the point completely. Even if you implemented a call centre system that detected and automatically played someone’s all-time favourite music while they waited, a facility which is possibly not that far off, most music when played down the phone just sounds terrible. Butchering a song that someone actually likes is unlikely to improve the waiting experience.
We invite you to listen to our Voice, Music and Program demos listed in the playlist below. Music demos are listed first, Program demos are listed next, and our Voice demos are listed towards the bottom. Please click on a demo to hear a short sample.
1. Start with a warm greeting. It’s only polite to say “Hello”. However, don’t forget to ask the caller to stay on the line and wait.

Solo guitar and piano music can also be decent choices provided you avoid songs with extremes of high and low volumes and pitch. Most phone systems come with default tracks that, coincidentally, fall squarely into these categories. If you’d like something a bit different then you can find plenty royalty-free tunes available to purchase online (they’re not all that terrible), but remember you'll need to pay for a PRS license if you want to make use of tracks by a recording artist.
Where this creates an extra snag with music on hold is that the loudest part of a song doesn’t typically come in until the final chorus or reprise. This means that if you just listen to the first 10 seconds to check that your new hold music is working, then chances are you’ll be blissfully unaware that three minutes into holding (just as customers are beginning to feel irritated anyway), you start playing a sound like fingernails on a blackboard to them.
