No one wants to be stuck on hold with silence (30 seconds feels like 5 minutes!).

Regrettably for my purpose, the software requires that you add a "message on hold", which makes perfect sense for this devices intended purpose, if not for my own use. But I worked around the problem by recording a second of silence and then adjusted the software the effectively play only my cheesy elevator music.
People don’t like going on hold, but you knew that. Funny, considering the early telephone users had to wait to be connected anyway, but now we expect an immediate connection. Think back a couple of decades to the dial-up era. You probably remember the time it took for AOL to connect—and the sounds that went with it. Now, a web page that takes more than a few seconds to load is inexcusable.
We will determine whether your communications platform (phone system) can use our Hosted Streaming Music On Hold Messages, which will automatically change which messages are heard based on time of day, day of the week and other scheduling preferences. I agree with you. The music phone service provider use is never the best! Like you, when I switch to my calendar on iPhone and ask my caller to wait while I do that, it would be great to have one of my iPod tracks play to him until I pressed the green bar again to return to the call. Surely one could set that up independently of the phone service provider: just a matter of substituting my music choice for my voice until I clicked back off hold?? If we learned anything from Napster, it’s that music doesn’t come for free. While there are a few free music sites out there, there are plenty of royalty-free websites for finding hold music, but keep in mind you may have to pay a subscription fee or download fee. (OnSIP subscribers can access three free music channels; read on for more details.) If you’re of the mind that your business could and should use Top 40 or other recent tracks, you will have to pay royalties for the right to use them.
Note that the music will always play from the beginning each time the unit is turned on. This isn't a problem when using the device for music on hold, it's intended purpose. But for my use, I bought a bunch of 1 GB USB drives, and recorded different "cheesy elevator music" on each, which we will be able to change out for variety.
