The most common codecs are G729 (compressed) and G711 (non-compressed). They are designed to compress human speech, and often cause a loss of audio fidelity — which is worse in some languages than others. On hold music that has been specifically designed for that purpose, to be used with VoIP systems and codecs, can sound great. But it is not easy to come by.
I agree with you. The music phone service provider use is never the best! Like you, when I switch to my calendar on iPhone and ask my caller to wait while I do that, it would be great to have one of my iPod tracks play to him until I pressed the green bar again to return to the call. Surely one could set that up independently of the phone service provider: just a matter of substituting my music choice for my voice until I clicked back off hold?? I haven't used this device for an extended period, but since there are no mechanical parts, I expect that it will last. We have been using a professional on hold service for many years at about $60/month. The box that the professional company gave us sounded great when customers would call from a Lan Line. But, when calling from cell phone the voice messages were lower volume and the music would sound horrible. Music keeps cutting in and out and sounds very staticky. So we decided to save some $ and cancel our subscription and buy this unit. We are using the default music and voice messages that came preloaded instead of doing our own music and messages.

Remember, "your call will be answered in the order in which it was received." So, relax and enjoy.
