Before we get into “Step-By-Step Guide to Custom On Hold Messages” it’s important to understand the value of having custom on hold messages for your brand. Business has always been done over the phone, and callers have always been put on hold, but as online shopping has surpassed brick and mortar traffic, over-the-phone sales have reached all time highs. A recent study by Marchex shows that Americans spent more than $1 trillion in mobile “click-to-call” commerce, and there was over 93 billion consumer-to-business phone calls from smartphones and this number is expected to grow to a whopping 162 billion by 2019, 70% of callers are placed on hold 62% of callers hang-up in less than 45 seconds 34% of callers who hang-up will never call back.

Above all you must encourage the caller to remain on the line. Provide reassurance to your clients that an agent will be available soon and don’t forget to convey the idea that their time is valued and their call is important.
Helpful message on hold sections are meant to speedily improve the caller experience. Good content to provide during these sections might include information that the caller may be looking for on their call, information regarding access to a business location, troubleshooting steps and problem resolution and information on organizational changes that the caller may need before proceeding with their call.
A comedic on hold message script isn’t just some novelty you can invest in because you feel like it. It’s a way to distinguish your company and establish your brand, and it can help make your customers more eager to do business with you. It’s icing on the cake of your company; without it, it’s not really a cake at all.
So how do you choose the right hold music? Start with what’s appropriate for your business. A funeral home wouldn’t blast the Bee Gees. A sports arena isn’t going to stream some easy listening to the fans. Know your audience, understand their mind space, and pick your music accordingly.
The word “Ringback” is perhaps unfairly associated with a niche market of cell phone users. A ringback tone is a signaling tone that the caller hears while the phone is ringing. In America, the tradition has been to have a two second tone with a four second pause, mirroring the two second ring and four second pauses on the other end.
We strongly recommend that you write short, independent messages, with a musical interludes. The volume of the music should be turned down during narrative messages.

For those still using analogue or digital phone systems, voice on ISDN circuits has a bandwidth of around 4000Hz. The audio from an analogue phone is sampled at 8000Hz, and because of the nyquist theorem, must be low-pass filtered to 4000Hz. So any frequencies in the audio beyond 4000Hz are lost. Interestingly, the human ear and mind are good at recognising human speech, so this is considered "toll-quality" voice, i.e. good enough to pay for. This is the reason why certain vocalised letters are difficult or impossible to tell apart on the phone. For example, the differences between B, P, T, C, etc. are almost entirely above 4000Hz.
