Most people don’t know this, but voicemail systems have the functionality to listen to and rerecord your voicemail if you are unsatisfied. Usually, this can be accessed by pressing # or 1 to return to the voicemail menu. From there you will hear the prompts to listen or rerecord your voicemail.

Approach voicemails with a scientific outlook, and score each one. Create a score sheet with a rating system that addresses the following: Would you save that voicemail? Would you return that call? Would you return that call right away? Are you missing the basics (alternative phone number, optimal ways to get in touch, a fallback person to call)? Did you craft it or wing it?
One of the fastest ways to derail the cohesiveness of your voicemail is to skip the introduction altogether and jump right into the body of your message; skipping the greeting is sure to leave your listener confused about who you are and why you are calling them.

Ok so let’s say you’ve made a few calls and have left several messages and you don’t want to leave another one… if that’s the case, at least hang up before the end of their “leave a message after the tone” instructions so that they don’t get notified of a voicemail just to hear you hanging upon them.

Rehearse or write down your message before recording it. Remember that old saying “practice makes perfect?” It’s certainly true when it comes to creating an electronic greeting.
