You have reached xxx-xxxx. We picked this machine up at a garage sale in “as-is” condition. You can try to leave a message on it, but we are not sure it will be recorded. If we don’t return your call, it means the machine did not work.
Depending on your connection to the person you are trying to reach, it is necessary to decide ahead of time what to say. So, avoid being the person that calls someone but then has no idea what they want to say. Especially if it goes to voicemail. Also, do not read off of a script. A simple outline can help you remember what to say, and it should flow naturally.

Ok so let’s say you’ve made a few calls and have left several messages and you don’t want to leave another one… if that’s the case, at least hang up before the end of their “leave a message after the tone” instructions so that they don’t get notified of a voicemail just to hear you hanging upon them.

Avoid telling your prospect what to do. You'll make returning your call seem like a chore or, worse, a demand. This should feel like a mutually beneficial relationship -- one in which each party wants to call the other back -- unprompted.
