There is something about that voicemail beep that sends brains into panic mode, and we will start spewing out words as fast as possible to get the awkwardness of talking to a machine over with. The problem is if you speak too quickly, your listener won’t be able to understand what you’re saying –making the whole point of the voicemail irrelevant.
Might sound a bit alarming but consider the number of times you’ve tried to leave a voicemail only to hear “this voicemail box is full”. Even if you can leave a message, a millennial may never listen to it. After you’ve made the call, whether you were able to leave a voicemail or not, follow up with a text message to get their attention and hopefully a response.
Apple makes it easy to save and share voicemails. This is excellent for business or scholastic use. Share important messages with coworkers or classmates, or upload them to a computer anyone can access. Just be careful you’re sharing only what you want to.
A good voicemail should be more about the prospect than the salesperson. Especially when cold calling, you want to provide as much value as possible to incentivize your prospect to return your call.
"When closing your voicemail, say that if you do not hear from them in three days, you promise to call back. Three days later, start your voicemail (or live call if you reach the person) with, 'As promised, I am calling again to share...' Salespeople are often coached to sound enthusiastic and excited on the phone, thus raising their natural voice pitch to a high, unnatural tone. In my opinion, this tone of voice makes it clear to the listener that not only is this an uncomfortable call, but a generic one.
