Clearly state your purpose and next steps. Whether it’s a demo, an appointment, or the best contact to talk to, simply ask for it.
“Keep your voicemail messages short, sweet, and snappy," advises Will Craig, Managing Director of LeaseFetcher. If your voicemails and emails are exactly the same, you lessen your chances of getting a response to either. So make them different by reserving certain questions for voicemail instead of email.

Hello and thank you for calling, [Company Name], where [state your short company slogan]. If you know the extension of the party you are trying to reach, you may dial it at any time. To speak with a Sales representative, press 1. To reach a Customer Support agent, press 2. To reach our Billing department, press 3. Leaving ambiguous voicemail messages almost guarantees that you will not get all you could have from the conversation, as you did not give the person you called the opportunity to prepare for your call.
(Follow-up call = you’ve spoken before, made some progress through the sales process and a follow-up call was required)
As I said, I use a “3 strikes, you’re out” rule. You may find that 4, 5, 10 or 20 works best for you, but for me, it’s 3.
After each one, evaluate your performance. Most systems provide the option of listening to the message you just left. Doing this as much as possible will improve your performance more than anything else. Would you save that voicemail? Would you return that call? Would you return that call right away? Are you missing the basics (alternative phone number, optimal ways to get in touch, a fall-back person to call)? Did you craft it or wing it?
