Sales reps tend to be very declarative in their messaging. Their starting phrase in both voicemails and emails usually sounds something like, "My name is John Doe, and I work for Gadgets Inc."
End your voicemail by asking your prospect to tell you more, whether about their recent vacation to Thailand or their unique business pain points. It's a simple request -- and easier than, say, "Give me a call back, I'd love to find out when we can write up our contract."

Use your regular, normal voice – not too excited, not too subdued. Talk how you’d talk on the phone with someone you like but who doesn’t make you nervous. Communicate ease without flippancy and importance without exuberance.

After each one, evaluate your performance. Most systems provide the option of listening to the message you just left. Doing this as much as possible will improve your performance more than anything else. Would you save that voicemail? Would you return that call? Would you return that call right away? Are you missing the basics (alternative phone number, optimal ways to get in touch, a fall-back person to call)? Did you craft it or wing it?
Now, this might seem like I'm reneging on what I just said, but you can easily reconcile this point with the one above. While you should keep your tone conversational, you can't get carried away.
When do you leave a voicemail? This is largely dependent on your call sequence and cadence. It is recommended that you make several call attempts in order to engage the prospect on a “live call.” After you have done this and your attempts have not been fruitful, then you leave a voicemail.
4. Request to have your voicemail service disabled. Once the representative or automated message confirms this has been done, you can hang up.
“Good morning. You’ve reached the voicemail of [your name]. Today is [date]. Please leave me a message with your name and contact information. Oh, and here’s my motivational quote of the day: [read quote].”

Finally, the length of your sales voicemails is important. Research suggests that messages under 30 seconds long perform best. This should give you enough time to convey important information without wasting any of your prospect's valuable time.
