Never use voicemail as a way to avoid speaking with someone. It doesn't help, and a person would have to be terminally dense not to figure out your game. If you must call when you know the other person isn't available, say, "I know you won't be able to take the call now, but I wanted to let you know that..."
Approach voicemails with a scientific outlook, and score each one. Create a score sheet with a rating system that addresses the following: Would you save that voicemail? Would you return that call? Would you return that call right away? Are you missing the basics (alternative phone number, optimal ways to get in touch, a fallback person to call)? Did you craft it or wing it?
Make the last thing you say be your phone number. This ensures it's clearly visible on voicemail dictation, and makes it easy for prospects to call back. Avoid phrases like "Call me back when you get this," which can sound pushy. And, finally, tell them you'll follow up with an email. This gives the prospect two ways to return your call, which certainly can't hurt.
