I, for one, tend to forget to set my automated out-of-office (OOO) email responder and scramble to do it before the plane takes off đ Itâs important to inform your customers and business associates (and remind your colleagues!) that youâre away, especially if theyâre expecting a prompt response.

Hi stranger, Sorry I'm unable to reply to your email. I'm off frolicking in the meadows. Please do not contact me until I'm back.

While youâre writing and activating your out of office message, avoid including the following:
In my world, âplease contact $Managerâ is recognition of a staffing level problem. $Manager will have to decide what project to defer if a crisis comes up while someone is OOO.
Iâll get back to you when I return to civilization. Or to an area with WiFi. Or to the office on May 10th. Whichever comes first.

Most of what Iâm describing (as well as boyd) boils down to examples of clear, honest, communication. While it sounds simple, such openness is extremely rare in the workplace. It is rare because, especially with time off, this type of communication requires the sender to be vulnerable, to cede control, and/or to be assertive and frank about oneâs needs.

I usually put my boss in my OOO, because if something is so urgent that it needs to be delegated RIGHT NOW then itâs urgent enough that my boss should know about it, and heâs also in the best position to know who on the team to delegate it to based on everyoneâs workloads and what can be dropped. But the most likely result is that whoever is emailing me either waits for me to get back because itâs not that urgent or goes to the next/backup person based on our central documentation about who to contact for particular issues.
does this work when you turn your phone off entirely? like if i set up an auto-reply to texts and then turn my phone off, will people get that response? i am about to travel internationally & would love to have this set up for when iâm off the grid & my phone is off.
