I donât think itâs condescending, but I do find it annoying. I have a coworker who sometimes writes emails in this tone of voice, and itâs honestly way too much.

But letâs talk out-of-office messages: overshares, excessive detail, the ones that self-aggrandize (I once had a coworker whose auto-replies often said heâd be in late because he âpulled an all-nighterâ on various work projects, etc.), the ones that never get turned off, people who donât use them at all, and other pet peeves.
Iâm guessing that this comment was gratuitously cruel on purpose just for the lulz, but Iâll give it a serious response anyway:
Wherever you go on holiday, youâll probably have access to the internet at some point. You might want to acknowledge this in your O.O.O. â but itâs also worth forcing the sender to question if itâs really worth interrupting your holiday by setting up a very blunt alternative inbox... I know Iâm supposed to say that Iâll have limited access to email and wonât be able to respond until I return, but thatâs not true. My iPhone will be with me and I can respond if I need to. And I recognise that Iâll probably need to interrupt my vacation from time to time to deal with something urgent. That said, I promised my wife that I am going to try to disconnect, get away and enjoy our vacation as much as possible. So, Iâm going to experiment with something new. Iâm going to leave the decision in your hands: âą If your email truly is urgent and you need a response while Iâm on vacation, please resend it to [email protected] and Iâll try to respond to it promptly. âą If you think someone else at First Round Capital might be able to help you, feel free to email my assistant, Fiona, and sheâll try to point you in the right direction.
I received one from a coworker in middle management that said something to the effect of âIâm working on a large-scale project and will be unable to answer email until X date. Please contact [direct reportâs email] with any questions.â This went on for well over a month.
Hi Steve, thanks for your article. My issue is same as Pam Lamkin, above. In order to use your phone you must turn off âDrivingâ mode, and then any messages that come in will not get the auto reply as long as you are on your phone, and until you reinstate the driving mode. Any thoughts?
Giving the option to contact an email address containing âinterruptyourvacationâ provides two things â 1) A dose of humor, and 2) discouragement from actually doing what the name suggests. Plus, he prefaces it with a request for empathy, by explaining that he promised quality time to his family.
