15 Out of Office Messages for Professionals. February 26, 2021. Out of office messages are automatic email replies, or autoresponder email messages, that go out to colleagues, customers and clients when you are away from work. They let others know you are unavailable for contact and when they can expect a response to their emails.

I had a boss that required OOO messages anytime you left the office. A single sick day, leaving four hours early, coming in two hours late, etc. This at an org that didnāt require quick email responses, and at which people typically only put up OOOs for multiple days out.
It usually isnāt enough to just say youāre out and wonāt be responding to messages. Youāve got to give people options for how they can get their issue or request resolved. One of the easiest wins here is to provide alternative contact information. That could mean providing your mobile number while youāre out, or, more commonly, providing the phone number and email of the colleague (or department) that will be covering while youāre away.

This person decided that setting their out-of-office message was a prime time to settle an ongoing office argument about which Die Hard film is the best, complete with an integrated poll to add a little festive cheer to the auto-reply.
Yeah, announcing you were going to delete emails unread and expecting the sender to resend when you return would NEVER fly in my office. Iād get executive complaints about that, especially if it went to a client or outside party ā if a client canāt reach you, they will reach out to someone else who may not work at your organization and you lose business. I feel like this delete-it-all philosophy would only work for an entirely internal role where timelines are more relaxed, and even then, I feel itās a bit unprofessional to foist your own catch-up work onto others, especially if theyāve been backfilling for you while you were OOO.
