If you can, includeĀ the sender's original message in the automatic reply, to help them 'unsubscribe' you of any list or to remind them about their enquiry, which can be forwarded to someone more suitable.

I have a colleague who directs people to email an alternative email alias when sheās on leave. This alternative email alias? Yup goes to her. Donāt know why she does it. Sheās also set a rule in her team that they have to answer each othersā phones of someone is away from their desk. Inevitably, the person answering the phone canāt help and tells the caller to send an email. It drives me up the wall.
I was recently on the receiving end of a very perplexing out of office message. It simply said, āI am currently out of the office.ā No indication of when they would be back or who to contact in the meantime. Fortunately in my case this was someone I ccāed on an email as an FYI and did not need any response from, but stillāwho does that? IMO a good out of office message says how long youāre out and who to contact in the interim if things canāt wait, no more and no less.
I absolutely hate this and it would definitely irritate me if received. I agree with the letter writer that it comes over as condescending and also a bit passive agressive in places. Iām definitely not the audience for this one! Presumably this is an internal only version and the company culture would find this cute / funny.

Yes! I hate the āat my earliest convenienceā for the same reason ā it comes across as āIāll do it when I feel like itā. I would only use that phrase at work in terms of someone else (ie āat YOUR earliest convenienceā).
Yeah, that bugs me because a) now I donāt know when you actually will be back, and b) leaves me unsure what other information in the message may also out of date
