Skip the "Greetings," "Salutations," "Dear sir/madam." These are far too stuffy and robotic. Instead, start off your response with a simple "Hi" or Hello."
Figured it out: only works when set in driving mode, and driving mode works if you are actually driving or not đ Until then, this will work until they come up with a better solution. Thank you!!

This makes a lot of sense to me, since surely in the 3-4 months people tend take as leave in the US, your issue would have been resolved. Also for parental leave, most people delegate ongoing projects to some specific person, so anything thatâs still going to be going on months from now when you return is getting handled by someone else.
Thanks so much for your email. Iâve decided to take advantage of the holiday weekend and truly take [Monday/Friday] off. In an effort to come back fully recharged, I wonât be checking my email. Donât worry though, if itâs urgent, you can reach out to [name] at [email address].
I donât know what to say these days â Iâm still working from home so âout of the officeâ doesnât sound right any more, but âoff workâ seems like too much? Iâm probably way overthinking it but Iâve felt stuck every time I need to write one lately.

It doesnât matter whether youâre going to be out of the office for a few days, or a few months â if youâre going on vacation, itâs critical to remember to set up your out-of-office autoresponder.
Earlier this year, British comedian Steve Coogan underscored a growing trend to rethink the OOO when he used it not to advertise his own absence, but rather the return to our screens of his blazer-clad alter ego, hapless media personality Alan Partridge. Written in the broadcasterâs inimitable voice, it had stern words for anyone who dared email him: âIâm not in the office so both cannot and will not respond to your email,â it began. âIf your email is urgent, perhaps you should have tried calling instead. The very fact you were content to type out your query long hand and settle back to wait for a reply suggests you can wait, even if youâve put a red exclamation next to your email to make it stand out in my inbox. Wonât wash with me, that.â
I donât need some fancy, forensic gin-juggler to tell me why I like something. Just keep it simple. And real happiness is about simplicity.

I donât do them for meetings. I do have one that I turn on every Tuesday afternoon since I donât work Wednesdays. In our culture itâs not uncommon for people to check EMail when theyâre off. I donât do that so I need to let people know. I also put a status message up on Teams. I work with a team of 40 people and I canât expect them all to remember when Iâm there and when Iâm not!
The question last week about âthanks in advanceâ had me wondering about your thoughts on this personâs managerâs out-of-office reply in this video. I found it to be super condescending and way too much. What do you think? Would be interested in readersâ out-of-office messages.

HI. I need help. Auto reply works at me only for text messages. If anyone calls me auto reply doesnt work. Any suggestions? Thanks. Joco
I think the problem is that âat your earliest convenienceâ is a formulaic convention that uses explicit, almost exaggerated politeness to basically issue a stern direction, meaning âas soon as you possibly canâ. When you turn it into âat my earliest convenienceâ itâs unclear if you mean âwhenever itâs convenient for me to get to itâ (what the words say) or âas soon as I possibly canâ (what the meaning of the formulaic original is). Or else it sounds like you didnât quite understand how âat your earliest convenienceâ works.
Physical security is just as important as managing your technology when you are gone for the holidays. Take these key steps to ensure that your office is indeed locked up tight. Make sure no keys are left sitting out where they are easy to see or access. Check with security to make sure that they have keys to get in the building. Check security systems and cameras to be sure that they are fully functional. Make sure that the security system is sending a notification to someone who is actually in town for the holidays, not a manager who is going to be across the country! Lock up desks and filing cabinets, especially those that contain sensitive information. Place all keys in a safe location. Check doors and windows to be sure that they are locked. Review your incident response plan. Do you have a plan for how to respond when everyone is out of the office? This can include everything from a hacker going after your data to a physical emergency at the office.
