If you're anything like I am, you probably fall into team two. That doesn't leave a lot of time to get creative. But if you plan ahead, you might be able to craft some hilarity.

But what if youāre only taking off one day? Sometimes, it might seem silly to bother with an out-of-office for such a short amount of timeāespecially if itās a day that a lot of other people are taking off (such as a national holiday). If people do need you to get back to them urgently, theyāll think theyāre being ignored. (Even if you define āurgentlyā differently.) And if thereās a chance of an emergency landing in your inbox, itāll be that much harder for you to unplug because youāll just keep āchecking in.ā

Weāve gone into lockdown in my state again, and one of my colleagues (events) has put the following as her out of office: Thank you for your message, I am working however there may be a delayed response as we manage our current events that have been affected by the recent XXXXXX Lockdown. Ugh, I wouldnāt mind changing daily if I could have a couple of prepared responses for normal circumstances (i.e.: āIāve left for the day, but Iāll be back in the office tomorrow morning to return your callā) to select from, but having to create a new message for Tuesday night when the info for Monday night is the same? Rage inducing. Email is asynchronous, you KNOW youāre not going to get an instant reply and sometimes you email knowing fully well that it wonāt be seen until the next morning/week/whatever. Why on earth mandate an auto-reply for that?

Iāve started using one thatās short/sweet but still has a little bit of JAZZ. I canāt take credit for it ā I saw it on Twitter a few years ago. Itās been received well both inside and outside of my organization. Here it is. If it speaks to you, please yoink it and use it as you wish:
One of the only reasons I get voicemails is because our system is set up to send new voicemail messages to your email as an attached file. Now if only it would send the voicemail as a transcript, Iād be set. I donāt mind returning calls, but listening to voicemails is obnoxious, especially because people are really bad at leaving voice messages.
