I was recently on the receiving end of a very perplexing out of office message. Fortunately in my case this was someone I cc’ed on an email as an FYI and did not need any response from, but still–who does that? Use a voicemail with the capability to record several different messages. Excellent customer service takes a little extra work. The good news is, once you get your messages recorded, they are set. You may need to change your holiday greeting message to fit the season, but all of the others will be okay. Write your scripts before you record!

No difference! “I’ll be out of the office” is what I use. I find “away from my desk” a little too available, as if I’m only out for an appointment, but I think either one works.
