I, for one, tend to forget to set my automated out-of-office (OOO) email responder and scramble to do it before the plane takes off š Itās important to inform your customers and business associates (and remind your colleagues!) that youāre away, especially if theyāre expecting a prompt response.

Wherever you go on holiday, youāll probably have access to the internet at some point. You might want to acknowledge this in your O.O.O. ā but itās also worth forcing the sender to question if itās really worth interrupting your holiday by setting up a very blunt alternative inbox... I know Iām supposed to say that Iāll have limited access to email and wonāt be able to respond until I return, but thatās not true. My iPhone will be with me and I can respond if I need to. And I recognise that Iāll probably need to interrupt my vacation from time to time to deal with something urgent. That said, I promised my wife that I am going to try to disconnect, get away and enjoy our vacation as much as possible. So, Iām going to experiment with something new. I have a couple people that I work with though who set them for outside their normal work hours, like they automatically kick on at 4:30pm and off at 8am or whatever, and then thereās the one special snowflake who sets her out of office not only when she leaves for the day every day, but also when she takes her half hour lunch or her fifteen minute break, Jesus wept.
You must pay close attention to signs of negative language or tendencies to sound monotonous. Instead, you can use simple, everyday vocabulary to convey your message.
I find it rude because if I emailed them, it might be an FYI but requiring no action. If they just delete it, they might then be confused about project status later. I would be annoyed to have to re-send a message after the fact because they donāt think ANY email during their time off has value.
