Yeah. The overly cute OOO message reminds me of the overly cute messages people used to leave on their answering machines back in the day. âHi, this is Jim. Hello? *pause* Hello? Is anyone there? *pause* Just kidding, Iâm the one whoâs not here! Please leave a message after the beep.â or whatever. Like, itâs funny the first time, then itâs just annoying. Just let people know what they need to know.
Keeping It Real. I am currently out of the office on vacation. I know Iâm supposed to say that Iâll have limited access to email and wonât be able to respond until I return, but thatâs not true.

Yes! I hate the âat my earliest convenienceâ for the same reason â it comes across as âIâll do it when I feel like itâ. I would only use that phrase at work in terms of someone else (ie âat YOUR earliest convenienceâ).

It was very inefficient but I was making $3 above minimum wage and it was air conditioned. So no argument from me. They took me back for the winter break and would have had me every other summer except I did internships, so I guess I didnât do too badly.
Duh. We're in the travel industry. Of course, an out of office message involving dolphin-speak would be at the top of our list! Who doesn't love a dolphin?
If youâve written an out-of-office message before, youâll surely know some of the basics. For the most part, they still apply during the pandemic, with a few additional considerations. Hereâs a quick overview of what you should keep in mind as you compose your autoreply these days:
Sure, Kopelman is truthful about the fact that heâs on vacation, but he also lets the recipient know that he or she would be interrupting important family time if the first option is chosen. It states a point simply and uses humor to avoid making it sound like he wants the reader to feel guilty.
See, in my head, âas soon as possibleâ reads simply as a more formal way of saying âI will respond at my earliest convenience.â Like, either way, this person is getting back to you as soon as they can, whatever that actually means.

I donât know the word I would use, but I have a negative reaction to it.
If your request is urgent, thereâs no use sitting idly in my inbox. So please send your request to [Contact Name] at [contact email]. Whether you prefer to stick with something simple or have a little fun with your holiday out-of-office message, itâs important that you always make sure to at least include the basics: your return date and an alternative contact people can reach out to for urgent matters.

We have people who do this whenever they are teleworking, regardless of the circumstances. Teleworking is working and by putting OOMâs on, you are signaling that perhaps you are NOT, in fact, working. Stop it!
