Voicemail is also horrible for non-native speakers. Iām reasonably fluent in German but have to listen to voicemails at least 3 times to get everything. Why people canāt just type a text message is beyond me.

I also tend to check my email 2-3x per day while Iām out for my own sanity and will respond to important* ones if not doing so would hold something big* up. Not using OOO avoids some of the self-righteous nonsense from people with nothing better to do than try to micromanage my personal time.
But what if youāre only taking off one day? Sometimes, it might seem silly to bother with an out-of-office for such a short amount of timeāespecially if itās a day that a lot of other people are taking off (such as a national holiday). The appropriate tone depends on the holiday. If youāre closing for Christmas or New Yearās, itās safe to assume your customers expect you to be festive and maybe even humorous. Conversely, if youāre closed for Veteransā day, your email should strike a more serious chord. Use our templates and double-check your tone before you hit send.
My team had a standard Christmas OOO, because we had international clients who needed reminding that basically the entire country is OOO 25th-1st. We do OOO messages, but also send an email to the department and other relevant people, so that part doesnāt sound odd to me. I want to know if someone is going to be away next week, because then I can plan accordingly instead of sending them an email about something important Monday morning and find out Iām SOL until the following week.
If this is a good representation of this individualās personality, then I think they would be a fun co-worker and a reasonable boss.
