Open the Phone app . Press and hold “1” to call your voicemail. Enter your PIN and press “#”. Press “*” for the menu. Press “4” to change settings. Press “1” to change your greeting. I called into my voicemail, and tried to change the greeting to no avail. After a few attempts, I realized that I had had an "extended absence" greeting in effect. Once I switched to a "custom" greeting, I was able to record and activate a custom greeting.

To Reset Network Settings, begin by opening the Settings app. Next, tap General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings and enter your passcode. Your iPhone will reset network settings and restart itself.

It’s different from the age old answering machines in that instead of storing the message on the device, it stores it in a mailbox on your service provider’s server, the same way an email message is stored.
