I had installed WhoApp yesterday to see how I might like it, and decided to uninstall it. WhoApp uses its own VoiceMail, so when I uninstalled it and couldn't change my greeting, I was ready to blame WhoApp! Thankfully, this thread gave me the correct solution. I just deleted all of my old voicemail messages and everything works now!
Tried all of these suggestions. Still can't get voicemail to record greeting. Says it is on custom greeting, won't allow me to play. Won't allow me to switch to default. Suggestions? One of the best and quick fix to this issue is to turn off Wi-Fi for once and switch to Cellular data connection and then try to change the default greeting to custom on iPhone.
How how how can that be??!! This is the year 2016, and I can’t set basic options like the number of rings! Actually I too want to turn off voicemail completely. I am aghast to read I don’t have a choice.

Check your voicemail on iPhone. In the Phone app , Visual Voicemail (available from select carriers) shows a list of your messages. You can choose which ones to play and delete without listening to all of them. A badge on the Voicemail icon indicates the number of unheard messages.
