When I go to set up voice mail, it asks me to enter a voicemail code, add a 4 digit number and then it asks to confirm that code, I hit done and it tells me that voicemail is currently unavailable, try later.

Note: If you have no saved voicemail messages, you should enter the Main Menu automatically. You can skip this step. Press 2 to change your greeting.

While recording, it is a good idea to keep the iPhone voicemail message short. Ideally do not make callers listen to you for more than 25 seconds.

Our phone does not leave any type of a prompt on the main screen when there is a new voice mail waiting. Is there some way to turn this feature on?

Now, click on the “Settings” or “More Settings” option. How how how can that be??!! This is the year 2016, and I can’t set basic options like the number of rings! Actually I too want to turn off voicemail completely. I am aghast to read I don’t have a choice.
Your iPhone does have a voicemail password, but you only have to enter it once and many new iPhones set it up automatically. However, there still needs to be some form of authentication between your carrier and your iPhone to download your voicemails. Even though you don’t see it, your voicemail password still exists.
